The Origin Of Teak Wood

Teak wood is a type of hardwood. The botanical name for Teak is Tectona grandis, which is native to south and southeast Asia, mainly Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Sri Lanka. In Indonesia, it is also called Jati. Teak tree is a slow growing deciduous tree which can grow up to 40 meter in height. It has small, fragrant white flowers and large papery leaves that are hairy on the lower surface. Teak wood has a leather-like smell when it is freshly milled and is particularly valued for its durability and water resistance. The wood is used for boat building, construction, veneer, furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects. Teak’s natural oils make it weather resistance, and make the timber termite and pest resistant. Teak is durable even when not treated with oil or varnish. Since around the 7th century, it has been used to outfit and adorn the residences of the wealthy and powerful. The wood’s reputation made its way out of the region through the Dutch, who colonized Indonesia. They used the wood for shipbuilding; teak makes for an excellent ship wood because of its natural resistance against dry rot.
