The Origin Of Sono Wood
Sono Wood or Sonokeling is commonly known as Indian Rosewood in Asia. The botanical name for Sono tree is Dalbergia latifolia. It is native to low-elevation tropical monsoon forests of south east India. Some common names in English include rosewood, Bombay blackwood, roseta rosewood, East Indian rosewood, reddish-brown rosewood, Indian palisandre, and Java palisandre. Its Indian common names are beete, and satisal. The tree grows to 40 metres in height with dense canopy shaped dome and is evergreen, but locally deciduous in drier subpopulations, making the tree very drought hardy. Not all species in the large genus Dalbergia yield rosewoods; only about a dozen species do. Genus Dalbergia is named in honour of Swedish brothers Nicholas Dalberg and Carl Gustav. The former is a physician and botanist while the latter explored the West Indies. Species latifolia is from the Latin word “latiflorus” which means with broad leaves.
At a summit of the international wildlife trade in South Africa, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) moved to protect the world’s most trafficked wild product by placing all 300 species of the rosewood tree under trade restrictions. At CITES meetings in 2013, 2016, and 2019, additional rosewood species were listed for protection, triggering market booms in China. There exists an international high demand and price for this premium wood due to its excellent qualities.
Sono Wood furniture Durability
Sonokeling tree is an extremely slow growing species, usually with a long straight trunk. Sono wood is hard, heavy, durable, and good resistant to insects and are highly resistant to fungal decay of wood when properly dried. The wood produce a sweet smell when being worked on and can persists for a period of time. Certain pieces might have an unusual aroma which is the effect of fragrant aerosol, not the wood quality. Wood from the tree is used in premium furniture making and cabinetry, guitar bodies and fret boards, exotic veneers, wood carvings, luxury parquet flooring, boats and skis. The natural wood colour of Sonokeling ranges from golden brown to a deep purplish brown, with darker brown almost black streaks. The wood darkens with age, usually becoming a deep brown. Sono wood is highly prized throughout the world for its excellent qualities of having a long straight bore, its strength, its high density and its natural dark and elegant beautiful wood grains.
